The Canisius softball team split a non-league doubleheader at Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday, taking game one by the score of 6-0 before falling in the nightcap by a 4-3 count in 10 innings. The Golden Griffins are now 12-9 on the year.

In game one, Canisius starter Jen Consaul went the distance and fanned seven for her eighth win of the season in circle. The junior from Chili, N.Y., now leads the team with 10 complete games and two shutout wins after she gave up four hits and walked just two. The Griffs scored twice in the top of the second when sophomore Marissa Miller and freshman Alexis Roman each drew bases-loaded walks to drive in the team’s two runs of the frame. In the third, freshman Bethany DeMarco doubled to left field to drive in teammate Stephanie Pfentner. Canisius added three insurance runs in the top half of the fourth, with sophomore Robin Kennery and freshman Tori Nappo each driving in RBIs to help the Blue and Gold’s cause.

In the game one win, Canisius posted six hits, with Kennery going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. DeMarco had a two-base hit in the win, as did junior Valorie Nappo. On the year, the Griffs have 31 doubles as a team, which leads the MAAC.

In the second game, Canisius trailed 2-0 after two innings, but scored two in the top of the third and then added a run in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Trailing 2-0, Kennery hit her second homer of the season with two outs in the frame that allowed teammate Michelle DelPrince to score as well. Canisius took a 3-2 lead on the power of an RBI-base hit by Kennery in the top half of the fifth. Mount St. Mary’s (9-18) knotted the game at 3-3 in the sixth with two outs when Canisius dropped a fly ball in left field. The game would remain knotted at 3-3 until the bottom of the 10th inning when the Mountaineers scored the game-winning run off Consaul with a base hit to center. Consaul took the loss after Canisius starter Amanda Baun went nine innings and allowed three runs on four hits while striking out six and walking four.

The Griffs had just three hits in the second game, with Kennery recording two of those. She also knocked in three RBIs. DeMarco also had a hit in the game for the Blue and Gold while Roman was credited with a run scored.

Canisius will head south to play a non-league twinbill at College of Charleston Tuesday, April 2. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
