The Canisius baseball team used a four-run third inning, followed by six shutout innings to defeat the University of Akron 4-3 at the Demske Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Griffins improve to 28-10 overall, extending their overall winning streak to eight games and home winning streak to six games.

Akron scored the first three runs of the game, getting a solo homer to right from Jared Turocy in the second inning and a two-run homer to center from Joey Havrilak in the third inning.  The Griffs came back in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. A solo homer down the left-field line from senior Christian Segar got the Griffs on the board. Freshman Brett Siddall singled to left on a 0-2 pitch and junior Jimmy Luppens reached on a four-pitch walk. Junior Jesse Kelso hit a three-run homer to center to put Canisius up 4-3.

Neither team would score the rest of the way as junior Mike Tolsma threw 4.2 scoreless innings in relief of starter Iannick Remillard. Tolsma allowed two hits and struck out one to improve to 2-0 on the season. Remillard allowed three runs on four hits and struck out two in three innings. Sophomore Aaron Casper got the final four outs of the game to pick up his first career save.

Segar and Kelso were the only Golden Griffins with two hits in the game as Canisius hit into three double plays on the day. The Griffs also had two baserunners throw out attempting to steal, including a strikeout and caught stealing to end the first inning.

Canisius returns to the field on Thursday afternoon, when the Golden Griffins play at Binghamton. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Notes: The eight-game winning streak is the longest for the Golden Griffins since a nine-game winning streak during the 2008 season (March 22-April 2)… Only four of the 27 outs recorded by Canisius pitchers left the infield, as the Griffs’ staff had 13 groundball outs, three strikeouts and seven pop outs… Freshman Anthony Massicci extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a fourth-inning single… The home run for Segar was the first of his Canisius career… The eight-game winning streak for the Griffs is the fourth-longest active streak in the country... The game was played in 1 hour, 52 minutes.
