The University of Akron shot 62.5 percent in the second half and turned 17 offensive rebounds into 17 points to defeat the Canisius women’s basketball team 72-56 at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Golden Griffins fall to 3-2 on the season.

“Akron is a good transition team, and we had the tempo that we wanted for about 25 minutes. Akron showed why they are a good team, and we saw it takes 40 minutes to play with a team at this level,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We got enough stops on the defensive end, but really struggled to complete them as Akron controlled the glass and made us pay.”
Canisius took the Akron offense out of rhythm in the first half as the Griffs built an 18-13 lead and held a lead for a majority of the half. Akron went on a 9-0 run to take a 22-18 lead before the Griffs battled back and took a 30-27 lead into the locker room after a banked-in 3-pointer from Mills at the buzzer. Canisius held Akron to 29.7 percent from the floor in the first half, but the Zips overcame that field goal percentage with nine second-chance points.
The tempo picked up to start the second half but Canisius matched Akron and held a 40-35 lead after a 3-pointer from junior Kayla Hoohuli just over four minutes into the half. The Zips then took control of the game with a 24-7 run during the next eight and a half minutes. Akron scored 37 points on the final 25 possessions of the game after Canisius limited the Zips to 35 points on 47 possessions in the opening 25 minutes.
