Ray Hennessy is entering his second season as a volunteer assistant coach on Mike Rappl's staff. A former assistant baseball coach at both Mercyhurst (1988-91) and Erie Community College (1991-93), Hennessy brings a wealth of softball knowledge to the Canisius staff. Since 2002, he has served as the president and Gold Team coach for the New Era Diamond Girls, one of the top club programs in Western New York. On the Canisius staff, he will help with practice and game management while also working with the team's outfield defense.
Hennessy was the varsity high school softball coach at Immaculata Academy in Hamburg, N.Y., from 2004-13. There, he took over a program that had one win in three seasons and turned the team around, posting a 137-75 record in his 10 years at the helm of the team. Immaculata earned a trip to the NYSIAS Class C semifinals in both 2005 and 2007 and the team finished tied for first in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association in both 2009 and 2010. At the club level, the Gold Team for the New Era Diamond Girls program has posted several top-five finishes at national tournaments, most recently placing fifth at the 2013 U-18 Triple Crown Nationals.
Hennessy earned his associates degree from Hilbert College, where he played baseball and earned all-regional honors, and he also played college baseball at Brockport. He holds a bachelor's degree from Mercyhurst and a master's degree from Canisius.
He and his wife, Laurie, have been married for 22 years and they have three daughters, Meghan, Molly and Katelynn. He is currently the CFO for Superior Medial Consultants, located in Buffalo.
