Marist College broke the game open with a 12-point run in the second half to defeat the Canisius women’s basketball team 73-47 in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins drop to 7-11 overall and 3-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athltic Conference.

Senior Jen Lennox and junior Kayla Hoohuli each had 10 points for the Golden Griffins, with Hoohuli scoring in double figures for the fifth consecutive game. Canisius was held to 37.5 percent from the floor and 30 percent from behind the arc.

“We lacked focus and attention to detail throughout the game, something that is imperative when you play against a very good team like Marist,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “It was disappointing to not get a high-energy effort after the way we have played the past few games.”

Marist (13-5, 7-1 MAAC) methodically built its lead in the first half. A layup from Lennox cut the deficit to 11-8 at the 14:18 mark before the Red Foxes scored 12 of the next 16 points to take a 23-12 lead with just over eight minutes left. The Griffs got a 3-pointer from senior Jen Morabito just before the halftime buzzer to make it 37-24.

The Red Foxes jumped out to a 19-point lead with 14 minutes left before Canisius scored the next eight points. A layup from Hoohuli capped the run and made the score 51-40. After the teams traded baskets, the Griffs got a stop but committed a turnover on the following possession. That turnover kickstarted a 12-point spurt for the Red Foxes during a span of just over two minutes to build a 23-point lead and put the game away.

Emma O’Connor led all players with the 20 points and 10 rebounds while Casey Dulin had 15 points. Sydney Coffey added 10 points, five rebounds and three steals as Marist shot 47.4 percent from the floor and scored 34 points in the paint.

Canisius begins a stretch of three-straight road games on Friday, when the Golden Griffins play at Fairfield University. Game time at Alumni Hall is set for 7 p.m.

Notes: The five-game stretch in double figures by Hoohuli is the second-longest on the team this season, behind a streak of six straight games by senior Jamie Ruttle… Lennox scored in double figures for the third time this season… Redshirt junior Courtney VandeBovenkamp set a career high with five assists.
