Canisius junior Robin Kennery has been named to the 2014 Preseason All-MAAC Team, the conference office announced today. In the annual MAAC Preseason Poll, the Golden Griffins were picked to finish fifth in the 11-team league. The Preseason All-MAAC Team and the MAAC Preseason Poll are voted on by the conference’s head coaches.
Kennery earned All-MAAC First Team honors following the 2013 season after she hit a team-high .350 with seven doubles, three home runs and 39 runs batted in. She played in and started all 47 games a season ago for the Blue and Gold, and she ended her sophomore campaign with 25 runs scored, which ranked third on the team to go with six stolen bases.
Fairfield’s Lauren Liseth and Marist’s Nicole Cheek were named the MAAC Preseason Co-Players of the Year. The Marist Red Foxes were picked as the league’s preseason favorite, while Fairfield was chosen to finish second. MAAC-newcomer Monmouth was selected to place third, while Siena and Canisius rounded out the top-five. Iona, Quinnipiac, Niagara and Manhattan took places six through nine, while Rider and Saint Peter’s rounded out this year’s preseason voting.Canisius opened the season last weekend by going 2-2 at the Cleveland State Dome Invitational in Cleveland, Ohio. The Griffs will return to action Feb. 21-23 at the Western Kentucky Invitational in Bowling Green, Ky. The team will open MAAC play Saturday, March 29, at Niagara.
