Softball Snaps Losing Skid with Extra-Inning Win

The Canisius College softball team snapped its six-game losing streak with a 3-0 eight-inning win over Bethune Cookman Thursday afternoon in the first game of the Loyola Marymount Invitational II in Los Angeles, Calif. Canisius scored the game's only three runs in the top half of the eighth inning thanks to an RBI-double by Robin Kennery and a costly error by the Bethune Cookman infield.

In the team's second game of the day, the Golden Griffins lost to host Loyola Marymount 9-8. Canisius is now 4-13 on the year.

In the victory over Bethune Cookman, the two teams played through a scoreless seven frames before heading to the eighth inning. Using the international softball tiebreaker rule, Kennery led off the extra frame with a double down the left field line. Later in that inning, two Canisius runs scored an an infield error by Bethune Cookman (9-19). Canisius senior pitcher Jen Consaul earned the shutout win after she went the distance and allowed just five hits while fanning five. Freshman Lindsey Silfer added two hits to the winning effort for the Blue and Gold as the team improved to 2-1 on the year in extra-inning games.

In the nightcap, Loyola Marymount scored four runs in the game's final three innings to overcome a 6-5 deficit in the Lions' 9-8 victory. Canisius pounded out 15 hits in the loss, led by senior Valorie Nappo and freshman Samantha Sharkey, who each had three hits for the Blue and Gold.

Canisius trailed Loyola Marymount 4-2 after two innings, but a six-run third put the Blue and Gold up 6-2. In that inning, Valorie Nappo drove in two runs with a single to center and freshman Jessica Berzins also had an RBI-base hit as well.

The Griffs will continue their stay at Loyola Marymount Friday afternoon when the team plays Dartmouth and UC Riverside at LMU's Smith Field.
