Canisius freshman Jessica Berzins was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week today after she hit .389 (7-for-18) with a double, five runs scored and two RBI in six games for the Golden Griffins last week. Berzins is the second Canisius freshman to be named MAAC Rookie of the Week this season, joining with teammate Lindsey Silfer, who was honored for her play April 15.
Berzins had two multi-hit games last week, one at Niagara and one against Rider, and she scored a run in five of the six games she played. She drew a team-high six walks last week and her base hit against Monmouth April 27 at home extended her hitting streak to five-straight games. Berzin, who leads the team with nine doubles this season, has reached base safely in her last 10 games, dating back to April 13 at Saint Peter’s.
The Placentia, Calif., native currently leads the team with her .339 batting average to go with a team best 24 runs scored and eight RBI. She has been credited with one triple this season and three stolen bases, and defensively, she leads all of the team’s regular outfielders with six assists.Canisius is 16-28 overall and 6-10 in MAAC play heading into the final week of the 2014 regular season. The Griffs will play their final home games April 30, when the team hosts Colgate for a non-conference doubleheader and then head on the road to play at Marist May 3 and Quinnipiac May 4.
