Vogl Shoots 73, Golf Fourth at MAAC Championships

Canisius golfer Joe Vogl tied a season-low with his first round score of 73 and the Golden Griffins posted a team score of 306 on the first day of the 2013 MAAC Golf Championship at Disney’s Palm Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Canisius is in fourth place in the nine-team field in the 54-hole event.

Vogl is currently tied for seventh at the conference’s championship event with his 73, which is one over par at the par-72, 7,011-yard course. Fellow senior Michael Carrig shot a three-over par score of 75 and is tied for 11th, while freshman Hunter Sagar is tied for 21st following his first-round score of 78.

Vogl went out in 38 after he bogeyed holes No. 8 and 9, but he rebounded to posted birdie on holes No. 10-12 en route to a score of 35 on the back for his 73. The senior from Buffalo, N.Y., also shot a 73 in the first round of the Bucknell Invitational Sept. 14, during the Griffs’ fall season. Carrig was one over through nine holes and then closed out the day with a 38 on the back nine.

Iona College leads the tournament after day one, as the Gaels posted a team score of 287, which is one under par for the round. Fairfield is in second after the Stags shot 293 as a team, followed by Loyola (Md.), which shot a combined 297. Manhattan is three strokes back of the Griffs in fifth place after the Jaspers carded a team score of 309 on Friday.

Iona’s Dylan Newman is the first-round leader after he shot a 68, which is four-under par. Six golfers, including Newman were under par in the first round, with Fairfield’s Steve Burak sitting in second after he carded a three-under par score 69 through the tournament’s first 18 holes.

Day two of the 2013 MAAC Golf Championship will start at 7:30 a.m., on Saturday and the final round will tee off on Sunday, April 28. Vogl will be the first Canisius golfer on the course on Saturday, as he is set to tee off at 8:20 a.m.
