The Canisius College golf team will open the 2014 fall schedule Sept. 6-7 at the Colgate Invitational in Hamilton, N.Y., Canisius head coach Todd Hummel announced today. In all, the Golden Griffins will play five fall events from early September through the first weekend in October.
Canisius will play at Seven Oaks Golf Course on Colgate's campus for the first time since the fall of 2006 when the Blue and Gold opens the fall slate at the Colgate Invitational. The Colgate tournament is a two-day, 54-hole event where rounds one and two will be played on Sept. 6, followed by the final round on Sept. 7. The following weekend, the Griffs will travel south to participate in the Leo Keenan Invitational, which is hosted by St. Bonaventure. Last year, Canisius placed fourth in the tournament, which will once again be played at Bartlett Country Club in Olean, N.Y.
The Griffs will make their annual trip to Ithaca, N.Y., Sept. 20-21 when the team takes part in the Cornell Invitational at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Canisius placed seventh in that event last season, where sophomore Cory Cullen earned his first career top-10 finish.
The 60th Little Three Championship will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, at Niagara Falls Country Club. Canisius saw its three-year run as defending champion come to an end last season when St. Bonaventure took home the team title. The 2014 event will mark the 10th time Niagara Falls Country Club has hosted the Little Three Championship since 1952. After a week off, the Griffs will wrap up the fall schedule at the Binghamton Fall Classic at the Links of Hiawatha course in Apalachin, N.Y.
Canisius returns six golfers to its roster from last season, including Cullen, who was named the 2013-14 MAAC Rookie of the Year. Of the six returning players, four players are junior and two others are sophomores, and the group has compiled 25 top-20 finishes over the previous two years.
