The Canisius volleyball team lost in three sets to the University at Buffalo in the Koessler Athletic Center on Tuesday night. The Bulls defeated the Golden Griffins 27-25, 25-23, 25-20.
Sophomore Lauren Siebert had eight kills and two blocks while freshman Jacklyn Malusa also had eight kills. Senior Roxanne Hernandez posted four blocks as Canisius had eight team blocks on the day. Junior Emily Litwin led the Griffs with 17 digs.
“We need to play with intensity and urgency throughout an entire set, not just for spurts or late in the set when we are trailing,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “With conference play starting on Saturday, we need to take what we learned in non-conference play and realize that every point and every thing we do matters throughout an entire match.”
Canisius led for a majority of the first set, building an 18-13 lead after a kill from Siebert. Buffalo used a 6-1 run to get within one at 20-19. The Bulls eventually evened the score at 22-22 and had a set point at 24-23. Canisius fought off two set points, but Buffalo won the set on its third chance.
Buffalo (10-0) broke open the first set with a couple of three-point runs and went up 16-10 after an ace from Kelly Svoboda. Canisius made a late run, fighting off four set points, using a kill from Siebert, two kills from sophomore Rachel Kline and a kill from senior Jessica Warner. Buffalo would take the second set on the fifth set point on a kill from Christine Fritsche. The Bulls used a 5-1 run in the third set to build a 21-14 lead en route to closing out the match.
Fritsche led Buffalo with a match-high 10 kills. Dani Reinert and Taylor Pritchett combined for 42 assists while Svoboda had a match-high 25 digs.
