The Canisius volleyball team fell in five sets to Siena College in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Saints won 20-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-22, 15-9 as the Golden Griffins see their record fall to 2-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Sophomore Lauren Siebert had a team-high 10 kills and seven blocks as Canisius totaled 16 team blocks on the day. Senior Emily Elek had nine kills and eight blocks while senior Roxanne Hernandez had six blocks.
“Siena and specifically Taylor Akana, stepped up late in that match, and they showed why they are the best in the league,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “They out-executed us down the stretch but we had some opportunities to not let it get to that point.
“Our effort and performance definitely improved from Saturday, but the result wasn’t the same. We have to regroup for Wednesday when we get Niagara in our gym.”
In the first set, the Griffs used a five-point spurt to go up 17-10 after a service ace from senior Jessica Warner. The Saints would get within three on a number of occasions, but a kill from Siebert followed by a service ace from the middle hitter gave Canisius the first set.
After Siena won the second set, the Griffs came back and won the third set. A 9-2 run, capped by a block from Siebert and fellow sophomore Grace Streicher, to go up 17-8. The Saints never challenged the rest of the set as a kill from sophomore Rachel Kline closed out the set.
Siena (6-9, 5-0 MAAC) built a 21-13 lead in the fourth set before Canisius came storming back. The Griffs won six straight points, capped by a kill from freshman Katlyn Tyler, to make it 21-19. The Griffs would eventually tie the score at 22-22 on a kill from Elek, but the Saints took the last three points to force a fifth set.
The Griffs controlled the first half of the fifth set, going up 8-6 after a Siena service error. After the changeover, the Saints won eight straight points, including seven straight on the serve of Taylor Akana, to go up 14-8 and eventually take the match.
Akana had a match-high 20 kills while Meghann Wright had 18 kills. Haley Howell posted 49 assists while Bobbi Lin Kalama had 27 digs.
Canisius (4-11, 2-2 MAAC) continues its five-match homestand against Niagara on Wednesday, with match time in the KAC set for 6 p.m.
Notes: Junior Emily Litwin posted double-digit digs (13) for the 14th time this season and for the 12th straight match… In the last six matches, Siebert is averaging 2.70 kills and 0.83 blocks per set while hitting .387… Elek matched her career high with the eight blocks (Oct. 14, 2012 vs. Iona)… Hernandez now has 34 blocks in the last six matches… The 16 blocks for the Griffs are a season high.
