The Canisius volleyball team dropped the final match of its five-match homestand in five sets to Manhattan College on Sunday afternoon. The Jaspers won 23-25, 25-27, 25-19, 25-23, 15-13 as the Golden Griffins fall to 6-12 overall and 4-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Freshman Katlyn Tyler posted a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Rachel Kline led the Griffs with 15 kills while senior Emily Elek had 14 kills. Elek and senior Roxanne Hernandez each had five blocks while junior Emily Litwin had 29 digs.

“We obviously played well for two sets but then made too many mental errors and Manhattan changed what they were doing to get back into the match,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “On Saturday against Iona, we made the plays down the stretch and today they went the other way.”

The teams were tied at 19-19 in the first set before Canisius created some separation with a 4-1 run and then won the set on the eighth kill of the set from Kline. Manhattan trailed 17-13 in the second set before winning six straight points to go up 19-17 and eventually build a 23-21 lead. Canisius then won three straight points, capped by a block from Elek and Hernandez, to go up 24-23. The Griffs would win the set on their third set point, coming on a block from Streicher and Siebert.

Manhattan (12-7, 6-1 MAAC) pulled away in the third set by winning seven of the final eight points. In the fourth set, the teams stayed close down the stretch but Manhattan won consecutive points to go up 24-22. After a kill from Tyler staved off the first set point, Manhattan used a kill from Anna Kitlar, to force a fifth set.

Canisius won the first two points of the fifth set on the serve of sophomore Jordan Tylec, but Manhattan answered with a 4-1 run to go up 5-3. The Jaspers would never give up the lead as Canisius evened the score at 8-8 but Manhattan wont he next three points to go up 11-8. Canisius made it 12-11, 13-12 and 14-13, but could never knot the score again as a tip kill from Ellie Wiekamp completed the win for Manhattan.

Kitlar had 14 kills, nine blocks and a .480 attack percentage while Malia McGuinness posted 16 kills and 20 digs. Wiekamp also had a double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs. Teodora Peric posted 49 assists and 12 digs.

Canisius plays the next three matches on the road, starting with Saturday’s match at Fairfield. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
