The Canisius women’s soccer team (0-1-0) lost its season opener to the NJIT Highlanders (1-0-0) by a score of 1-0 on Friday night in Newark, N.J.
Despite a strong offensive showing from the Golden Griffins, the home squad NJIT was able to sneak a late goal into the Griffs' net in the game's 77th minute to score the victory.
Canisius had 11 total shots throughout the game, including six in the second half. The Griffs out shot the home team 11-10 overall with senior Mallory Illsley leading the way with six total shots, including four on goal. Two other Griffs had multiple shots, as Sabrina Fitzgerald and Alexis Kroese both notched two shots apiece.
Senior Brigid St. Leger (0-1-0) had a strong opening performance, despite not being challenged much due to a solid performance from her defense.
The Griffs will return to action Sunday, Aug. 24, when Canisius takes on cross-town rival Buffalo. Game time is set for noon.
Game Notes: With the loss, Canisius moves to 2-1-0 all time against NJIT... Since the 2009-10 season, the Griffs have gone 3-2-0 after losing or tying the first game of the season... Illsley now has 76 career shots, after notching six during the first game of the 2014 season... The start for St. Leger was the fifth of her career.
