Iona uses balanced attack to knock off Volleyball

Iona junior Kathleen Owen (Bay Shore, N.Y.) led the visiting Gaels with a game-high 22 kills as Iona knocked off Canisius in four games Sunday in the Koessler Athletic Center by scores of 21-30, 28-30, 30-20, 21-30. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win moves the Gaels to 10-12 overall, 3-4 MAAC, while the Golden Griffins fall to 3-13 overall, 1-4 MAAC.


Owen scored 22 kills on 36 attack attempts for a .556 attack percentage. She committed just two hitting errors. Teammates Kathy Kunath (Newport, MI) and Katie Jellison (N. Quincy, MA) also scored double-digit figures in kills. Kunath, the team's leader in kills, was credited with 19 kills, while adding a game-high 17 digs. Jellison had 14 kills and 12 digs.


Iona's freshman setter Jennifer Hovan (Stratford, CT) had a game-high 51 assists, while collecting 15 digs as well.


Canisius freshman Christina Wildes (Long Beach, N.Y.) led the Golden Griffins with 18 kills. Freshmen Kim Hoffman (West Babylon, N.Y.) and Nicole Boucher (East Meadow, N.Y.) were each credited with 16 digs to lead the Blue and Gold.

Junior Jennifer Debee (Boca Raton, Fla.) had 14 kills on 38 attack attempts for a .316 attack average. Sophomore Nicole Lucie (Lancaster, N.Y.) added 13 digs in the losing effort. Canisius will be back in action Oct. 31, when the Griffs travel to Syracuse. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Canisius gets back to MAAC action next weekend with a road trip to Manhattan and St. Peter's.
