The Canisius College volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak with a five set win over Marist College in the McCann Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The win moves the Golden Griffins to 3-11 overall, 1-2 in the MAAC. The win over Marist was the first MAAC win of the season for first-year head coach Cathy Hummel. Marist falls to 1-17 overall, 0-5 in the MAAC.
Canisius won the first game 30-24 before dropping the second game by a 30-22 count. Canisius held a 2-1 advantage after taking the third game 30-26. The host Red Foxes came back once again by winning the fourth game 30-25 before dropping game five 15-12. The Griffs trailed early on in the fifth and deciding match by a 5-2 score, but rallied late in the game to pull out the win.
Freshman Christina Wildes (Long Beach, N.Y.) led Canisius with 15 kills and 17 digs. Fellow freshman Kim Hoffman (West Babylon, N.Y.) added 20 digs in the winning effort. Junior Jennifer Debee (Boca Raton, Fla.) had 10 kills and two solo blocks as well.
The Griffs will be back in action next weekend when the team plays host to MAAC rivals Fairfield and Iona. The Stags will be in the Koessler Athletic Center Oct. 27 at 7 p.m., with the Iona Gaels hitting the KAC floor at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
