Volleyball picks up first win in 2001 season

The Canisius College volleyball team picked up its first win of the 2001 season on Wednesday night by knocking off St. Francis (Pa.) in three straight games. The Golden Griffins defeated the Red Flash by scores of 30-23, 30-26, 30-26, giving first-year head coach Cathy Hummel her first win as head coach of the Blue and Gold.

Freshman Kim Hoffman (Babylon, NY) recorded 11 kills and 11 digs to lead Canisius. Fellow freshman Christina Wildes (Long Beach, NY) was credited with nine kills and a game-high 23 digs.

Junior setter Kelly Sieber (Depew, NY) was good for 29 assists, while sophomore Nicole Lucie (Lancaster, NY) added to the Griffs' defensive effort with 12 digs.

The win moves Canisius to 1-4 overall. The Griffs will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Cleveland, Ohio to take part in the Cleveland State Tournament. The Griffs will face-off with Towson University on Friday before hitting the court to match-up with host Cleveland State and Oakland (MI) University.
