Cleveland State Tops Canisius Volleyball 3-1

Michelle Iafigliola tallied 19 kills and 26 digs and Jamie Bouyer posted 17 kills as Cleveland State fought to a 3-1 (30-22, 23-30, 33-31, 34-32) women’s volleyball victory over Canisius in the Western New York Holiday Inn Volleyball Invitational at the Koessler Athletic Center Saturday morning.

Kelly Crain posted 57 assists to lead the Vikings. Canisius sophomore Kim Hoffman matched a career-high 21 kills and added 10 digs to lead the Griffs. Junior Nicole Lucie posted 10 kills and 26 digs. Senior setter Kelly Sieber tallied 18 assists in the first two games to move into second on the Canisius all-time assist list.

With the match tied 1-1, Cleveland State had a 29-21 lead in game three before Canisius ran off nine straight points on freshman Leigh Launhardt’s serve to take a 30-29 advantage. The teams traded points before the Vikings won the game 33-31. Cleveland State had match point at 29-26 in the fourth game, but Canisius tied the score at 30-30. The teams traded points again before the Vikings picked up the 34-32 win to close out the match.

Cleveland State improves to 10-3 with the victory, and Canisius drops to 2-9. The Vikings will take on Stony Brook at 4:30 p.m. in the Koessler Athletic Center, and the Griffs meet cross-town rival Buffalo at 7 p.m.
