Syracuse sophomore Morgan Jones collected a match-high 24 kills while teammate Kristen Conway chipped in 22 kills to help lead the visiting Syracuse University Orangewomen to a 3-2 (30-22, 23-30, 32-30, 28-30, 5-15) victory over the Canisius College Golden Griffins in the Koessler Athletic Center Sunday afternoon. The loss drops Canisius to 6-15 on the year, while Syracuse improves to 16-8 in 2002.
Canisius jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after hitting a season-best .484 in the match’s first game. Four players registered double digit kills, led by sophomore Christina Wildes and her team-high 20 kills. She also led the Canisius team with 18 digs. Fellow sophomore Kim Hoffman scored 16 kills and 14 digs, while senior Jennifer DeBee had 12 kills and freshman Leigh Launhardt added 11 kills in the Blue and Gold’s losing effort. Launhardt was also credited with three service aces, three solo blocks and five block assists. Junior Jackie Reed had a game-high 55 assists.
Syracuse’s Aila Dommestrup dished out 53 assists in the win. Conway had 27 digs in addition to her 22 kills. Syracuse rebounded after dropping the first game to knot the score at 1-1. The two teams split the next two contests before the fifth and deciding game where Syracuse jumped out to an early 6-0 lead en route to the 15-5 win.
Canisius’ match with Syracuse is the final non-conference game of the season for the Griffs, who will return to conference action next weekend with home matches against Siena and Marist. Canisius is 2-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this season.
