Canisius College freshman volleyball player Leigh Launhardt has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Week for the week ending Oct. 20. This is the second time in three weeks the Griffs’ outside hitter has been honored by the conference with this award. Launhardt is the first two-time Rookie of the Week award winner this season in the MAAC.
Launhardt registered 17 kills, three solo blocks and five block assists in Canisius’ 3-2 win over conference rival Niagara Oct. 19. The win over the Purple Eagles snapped the Blue and Gold’s three-match losing streak to their local rival and also helped the Griffs move to 2-1 in conference play this season. In Canisius’ 3-2 loss to Syracuse Oct. 20, Launhardt scored 11 kills, three service aces, three solo blocks and five block assists. Canisius is 6-15 overall in 2002.
Launhardt is the team’s leader in hitting percentage (.289), service aces (36), solo blocks (27) and block assists (46). Her 36 service aces in a single season ties her for seventh all-time at Canisius in that category and she currently ranks sixth all-time in program history in block assists through the team’s first 21 matches.
The Blue and Gold will return to action this weekend with two home matches against conference rivals Siena (Oct. 26) and Marist (Oct. 27).
