Youngstown State senior Colleen Royer had 19 kills and 13 digs to lead the Penguins to a 3-1 (30-18,30-28,25-30,30-25) win over Canisius College Friday night in the first match of the 2003 Binghamton University Tournament. The loss drops the Golden Griffins to 2-7 on the year, while Youngstown State improves to 5-4 overall.

Canisius junior Kim Hoffman had a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs in the loss, while teammate Leigh Launhardt was credited with 11 kills, two solo blocks and six block assists. Senior setter Jackie Reed posted 38 assists in the four-game loss. Junior Christina Wildes posted eight kills while freshman teammate Mary Boller had seven kills in her first action since returning from an injury which kept her out of the Blue and Gold's last five matches.

Annie Buecher had 14 kills and Cari Leslie posted 10 kills in the win for Youngstown State, which has now beaten Canisius twice this season. Canisius' freshman libero Nicole Phillips set a new career high with 20 digs for the Griffs.

Canisius will return to action Saturday, Sept. 13, for two more matches in the Binghamton Tourney. The Griffs will play in the day's first match at 11 a.m., against Quinnipiac, and will then close out the day with a match against the host Bearcats at 6 p.m.
