The Canisius College volleyball team took the first game but Siena then won the next three to defeat the Golden Griffins 19-30, 30-19, 30-24, 30-21 on Saturday afternoon in the Koessler Athletic Center.
Freshman Michella Domo (Vancouver, B.C.) led Canisius (9-17, 7-8 MAAC) with nine kills while Renee Lettow (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had eight kills for the Griffs. Senior Jess Stackhouse (Warsaw, N.Y.) paced the Blue and Gold with 18 digs while junior Brittany Gerde (Cincinnati, Ohio) had seven kills, 18 assists and 10 digs.
The Griffs controlled the first game by taking advantage of mistakes by the Saints who held an 11-7 lead. Canisius then won 13 of the next 14 points to build an eight-point lead, which was good enough to take the first game.
Siena responded in the second game by taking control early with an 8-2 run to build a 17-9 lead. The Saints never let Canisius get closer than four to even the match.
The teams stayed close in game three as Canisius fell behind 20-15, but eventually tied the match at 24-24. The Saints then won the next six points, capped off by a kill from Kelly Hummel to take the third game. Siena then methodically built a lead in the fourth game and closed out the match.
"Unfortunately, we weren't able to capture one of the berths in the MAAC Tournament," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "It certainly wasn't because of a lack of effort, but can be attributed to a lack of experience."
Siena (19-6, 14-1) had four players reach double digits in kills with two reaching 20 as Aubrey Bobo led all players with 24 to go along with a match-best .391 attack percentage. Nadiege Honore had 20 kills and 13 digs. April London had 59 assists for the Saints.
Canisius closes out its home schedule on Sunday afternoon, when the team hosts the Marist Red Foxes. Match time is set for 2 p.m. as the team will honor its senior class prior to the start of the match.
Match Notes: Gerde has had double-digit digs in four of the last six matches... Siena committed 10 service aces with four of those coming in the first game... Canisius had 10 blocks, led by two solo blocks and four block assists from Mary Curran (West Islip, N.Y.)... The Griffs had double-digit blocks for the eighth time in the last 12 matches as the 16 team block assists were the most since they team had 20 at Siena in the team’s other match this season.
