Volleyball Falls to St. Francis (Pa.) 3-2

The host St. Francis (Pa.) Red Flash overcame an early 2-0 deficit by posting three-straight wins to drop the Canisius College volleyball team 3-2 (38-36, 30-25, 13-30, 30-32, 8-15) Friday night in Loretto, Pa. The win was the first of the season for St. Francis (Pa.) and improves the Red Flash to 1-15 on the year, while the Golden Griffins fall to 5-6 with the loss.


Senior Kim Hoffman posted a team-best 19 kills to go along with 17 digs to lead the way for the Griffs. Fellow senior Christina Wildes finished the night with 19 kills and 13 digs, while freshman setter Lauren Lackovich was credited with 44 assists in the loss. Sophomore Emily McNabb had a solo block and five block assists, while freshman libero Jess Stackhouse scored 21 digs for the Blue and Gold.
Canisius jumped out early with two wins in the first two games, highlighted by the team's 38-36 win in the first contest. The 38-point effort set a Canisius record for points in a game. The Red Flash hit .274 as a team, including a .600 effort in the third game and a .267 mark in the fifth and final contest. Canisius hit .168 as a team and posted a total of 11-team blocks in the loss.

Nichole Hyer pounded 27 kills on 52 attack attempts for a team-best .404 attack percentage to go along with 21 digs to lead the way for the host Red Flash. Teammate Anne Roosevelt was credited with 22 kills and 16 digs, and Kimberly Duke added 13 kills and six block assists in the win. St. Francis (Pa.) setter Traci Hassell dished out a match-high 69 assists.

Canisius returns to action Saturday, Oct. 2, with a pair of matches on the last day of the Red Flash Invitational. The Griffs will meet West Virginia at 10 a.m., before meeting Binghamton at 4:30 p.m.
