The Canisius College volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches to West Virginia and Binghamton Saturday at the final day of the Red Flash Invitational in Loretto, Pa. The Golden Griffins fell to West Virginia by a 3-0 count (30-28, 30-20, 30-22) in the day's first match before losing to Binghamton 3-0 (30-27, 30-23, 32-30) in the nightcap. The Griffs fall to 5-8 with the two defeats.
In the first match, Canisius senior Kim Hoffman (right) was credited with a match-high 14 kills on 37 attack attemtps to lead the way for the Blue and Gold. Hoffman also collected 11 digs in the losing effort. Christina Wildes posted 10 kills and 11 digs, while sophomore Emily McNabb registered four kills and three block assists.
West Virginia senior Alison Zemanski powered the Mountaineers' attack, pounding 13 kills on 25 attack attemtps (.360 hitting percentage) and scoring a solo block, seven block assists and a service ace. WVU hit .330 as a team and collected 15-team blocks while holding the Griffs to a .169 hitting percentage.
In the Griffs' final match of the weekend, Binghamton's Anne Crocus posted 11 kills, two solo blocks and eight block assists to lead the Bearcats to the 3-0 win. Hoffman had a team-high 13 kills in the loss. Freshman libero Jess Stackhouse collected 17 digs for the Blue and Gold, while fellow freshman Lauren Lackovich was credited with 29 assists.
Canisius will return to action Friday, Oct. 8, against Wagner in the Valley National Bank Classic, hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson University.
