Volleyball Earns a Split at Valley National Banck Classic

Senior Christina Wildes (right) scored a career-high 28 kills and added 14 digs, while teammate Kim Hoffman was credited with 15 kills, 17 digs and four block assists as the Canisius College volleyball team posted a 3-1 win over FDU Saturday monring in non-conference volleyball action at the Valley National Bank Knights Classic in Hackensack, N.J. Canisius fell to Long Island 3-0 in the night cap to finish the event with a 2-1 record.

Wildes had her 28 kills on 58 attack attemtps for a .448 hitting percentage. Sophomore Mary Boller collected 14 kills and four block assists in the win for the Griffs. Freshman setter Lauren Lackovich had a match-high 57 assists, while fellow freshman Jess Stackhouse scored 24 digs for the Blue and Gold. Canisius improved its record to 7-8 overall with the four-game win after registering scores of 30-13, 29-31, 30-23, 30-20.

In the nightcap, Canisius fell to Long Island by a 3-0 (30-26, 30-23, 30-27) count. Wildes had 16 kills in the loss, with Hoffman picking up 14 kills, a solo block and two block assists. Sophomore Emily McNabb added three solo blocks and two block assists for the Griffs.

Three Long Island players had double figures in the kills column, led by Dana Denayo's match-high 17. LIU moved to 17-5 with the win, while Canisius' record fell to 7-9 overall with the loss.

The Griffs will play host to Syracuse Oct. 13, at 6 p.m., in the Koessler Athletic Center. The match will be the first home action for the Blue and Gold since Sept. 4.
