Canisius volleyball players Lauren Lackovich (right, top) and Jess Stackhouse (right, below) were named to the Preseason All-MAAC Volleyball Team, while the Golden Griffins received one first-place vote and were picked to finish fourth in the 10-team conference, it was announced today. Fairfield University is the coaches’ choice to win this year’s title after the Stags scored five first-place votes and a total of 95 points.

Lackovich served as the team’s primary setter in her freshman campaign and collected 1,040 assists, making her just the third player in school history to post 1,000-plus assists in a single season. She dished out a season-high 57 assists in the Griffs’ win over Fairleigh Dickinson and was credited with 30-plus assists in 20 of the team’s 26 matches.

Stackhouse was named the league’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year last season after leading the Blue and Gold in digs from her libero position. She played in all 95 games a season ago and her 442 digs ranks fifth all-time in single-season digs at Canisius. Stackhouse tied a school record for digs in a four-game match after posting 30 in a win over Colgate Sept. 11, and then she matched that mark with 30 digs in a four-game match against Marist. She also won a letter as a pitcher for the Canisius softball team last spring.

Fairfield, last season’s regular season champions, return five starters to a team that went 22-12 overall and 8-1 in league action. Defending champion Iona (87 points), Niagara (65) and Canisius (56) made up the top four in this year’s poll. Rider (51), Marist (48), Loyola (47) and Manhattan (43) were selected to place fifth through eighth place, respectively. Siena (33) received one first-place vote and was picked ninth, while Saint Peter’s (25) closed out the voting.

Canisius is coming off an 11-15 season in 2004. The Griffs return four starters and six letterwinners to this year’s team under fifth-year head coach Cathy Hummel. Canisius will open the 2005 season Saturday, Aug. 27, against Robert Morris in the Akron Invitational.
