The Golden Griffins are now 0-3 after the first weekend of action.

The Griffs jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Youngstown State (2-1) after winning the first match 39-37, which sets a new school record for most points scored in a match since the NCAA went to the rally scoring system in 2001. The Penguins scored wins in each of the next three games to claim the match, closing out the 5-game match with a 15-9 victory. Junior Mary Boller led the team with 14 kills on 37 attack attempts to go with four service aces and three block assists. Aislinn Hayes and Brittany Gerde posted 13 kills apiece with freshman Morgan Ammons added 11 kills in the losing effort. Hayes was credited with a team-high 16 digs for the Griffs, while sophomore setter Lauren Lackovich (right) recorded 49 assists.

Youngstown State had three player post double figures in the kills category, led by Jessica Fraley's match-high 31 kills on 57 attempts. Cari Leslie had 18 kills and 22 digs, while Amanda Cindric posted a match-high 30 digs for the Penguins in the win.

In the first match of the day, Akron hit .267 as a team en route to the 3-0 win. Akron's Jennifer Stewart was the only player in the match to post double-digit kills with 10. Aislinn Hayes had nine kills for the Griffs, while sophomore Jess Stackhouse was credited with 15 digs for the Blue and Gold in the loss.

Lackovich was chosen as the program's representative on the all-tournament team after dishing out 117 assists and posting 15 digs in the team's three matches.

Canisius will open the home portion of the 2005 schedule Friday, Sept. 2, against Maryland-Eastern Shore in the annual Western New York Invitational. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. The Griffs will play their next four matches at home, hosting Navy, Army and Colgate Sept. 3-4, in the Koessler Athletic Center.
