Canisius College sophomore Jess Stackhouse (right) has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced today. Stackhouse led the Golden Griffins with 68 digs as the Blue and Gold posted a 3-1 record at home in the 2005 Western New York Invitational.
Stackhouse, the MAAC’s reigning Co-Defensive Player of the Year and a 2005 Preseason All-MAAC selection averaged four digs per game and served up six service aces in 17 games last weekend. She led the way for the Griffs’ defense with 21 digs and a season-high three service aces in the team’s 3-1 win over Colgate Sept. 4. Stackhouse is averaging 4.72 digs per game this season, which ranks second in the conference.
The Griffs scored wins against Maryland-Eastern Shore, Navy and Colgate to improve to 3-4 on the year. The Griffs will return to action Friday, Sept. 16, when the team takes on St. John’s in the first match of the Bucknell Invitational, hosted by Bucknell University.
