Canisius College junior Leigh Launhardt has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s co-Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced today. Launhardt collected three solo blocks and 12 block assists as the Golden Griffins went 1-1 against Fairfield and Iona at home last weekend. This marks the second-straight week a Canisius player has won this award, sophomore Jess Stackhouse was named the conference’s top defensive player Oct. 17.

Launhardt was credited with nine block assists in the team’s 3-0 loss to Iona Oct. 23, in the Koessler Athletic Center to tie a 12-year old school record for block assists in a three-game match. Former Griff Kelly Schroer also had nine block assists in the Griffs’ 3-0 loss to Mercyhurst Sept. 7, 1993. Launhardt recorded 15 total blocks in the team’s two matches for an average of 1.88 blocks per game.

In the Blue and Gold’s win over Fairfield Oct. 22, the 6-foot middle hitter had three solo blocks and three block assists to help lead the Griffs to a 3-2 win over the Stags, snapping Canisius’ nine-match losing streak to Fairfield, which dated back to the 1995 season. Launhardt is the program’s all-time leader in career block assists with 196 and ranks second on this year’s team with 48 blocks assists in 78 games played. She also ranks second on the team in solo blocks with 15.

The Griffs are 8-13 overall and 2-2 in MAAC action after going 1-1 last weekend. The team will play its next three matches on the road, starting Oct. 29, at MAAC rival Marist. Match time in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., is set for 2 p.m.
