Rider University had four players pound down double figure kills and libero Nastasja Avramovic recorded a match-high 29 digs as the visiting Broncs held off the Canisius College Golden Griffins by a 3-2 score (30-25, 30-28, 21-30, 27-30, 15-12) in MAAC volleyball action Friday night in the Koessler Athletic Center. The win was Rider’s second conference victory in its last three matches and improves the team to 10-18 overall and 2-6 in league play. Canisius has dropped its last five matches and falls to 8-17 overall and 2-6 in the MAAC.

Rider’s Stefanie Lombardo led all players with 20 kills on 64 attack attempts to go with 20 digs and two service aces to help lead the Broncs back from a 5-1 deficit in the fifth and deciding game en route to the win. Megan Smith had 18 kills while teammate Jennifer Drummond posted 14 kills, six digs, three block assists and two aces.

Canisius junior Mary Boller led the Griffs with 15 kills and four block assists in the loss, with junior Aislinn Hayes and freshman Morgan Ammons closing out the contest with double-doubles. Hayes registered her team-leading 11th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 15 digs, while Ammons chipped in 11 kills and 14 digs. Leigh Launhardt had nine kills, three solo blocks and five block assists in the losing effort.

Rider came out of the gates swinging, taking the first two games of the night after hitting a combined .289 with five service aces. Lombardo was good for 11 of her 20 kills in the first two contests, but Canisius responded after a 10-minute intermission and took the next two games to force a fifth game, the eighth time this year the Blue and Gold have played a five-game match.

In the final game, the Griffs scored five of the first six points to take a 5-1 lead. The Broncs evened the score at 5-5 after a pair of Canisius attack errors and a kill by Lombardo. After the two team traded points back-and-forth, the score was knotted at 8-8. Rider took the lead for good moments later when Smith was credited with a kill to open a 3-0 scoring run by the Broncs en route to an 11-8 advantage.

Rider’s Kristine Dormer scored a match-high 49 assists in the win for the Broncs. Rider senior Embrey Minor had four digs on the night to surpass the 1,000-career digs mark before leaving the match with an injury. Canisius’ Lauren Lackovich had a team-high 37 assists for the Griffs.

The Blue and Gold will close out the 2005 schedule Saturday, Nov. 12, with a home match against Loyola in the Koessler Athletic Center. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
