Canisius College volleyball coach Cathy Hummel announced today that Michelle Godfrey (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) will join the Golden Griffins’ program for the 2006 season. Godfrey was a three-year letterwinner at North Tonawanda High School for head coach Jessica Anderson.

Godfrey helped lead the Lady Jacks to a Niagara Frontier League championship in 2005 with a 16-1 overall record. She was named a fourth-team all-state selection and a first-team All-NFL honoree in 2005. She led the team kills, hitting percentage, blocks and service aces in both 2004 and 2005 and was chosen as the Lady Jack’s “Best Offensive Player” after her senior campaign.

“Michelle is a tall, athletic, versatile player above the net,” Hummel said. “She has the ability to come in and challenge returning players for playing time. I believe she will have a bright future both on and off the court here at Canisius.”

The Griffs went 9-17 overall and 3-6 in MAAC action last year. Canisius will return six starters and 12 letterwinners to this year’s squad, which is set to open the season Aug. 25-26, at the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta.
