Three Golden Griffins had double-digit kills – led by 18 from freshman Michella Domo (Vancouver, B.C.) – as the Canisius College volleyball team defeated the Marist Red Foxes 30-19, 29-31, 30-21, 30-24 Saturday night at the McCann Center.
The 18 kills by Domo were a career high and the most by a Golden Griffin on the season as the freshman hit .567 in the match. Freshman Renee Lettow (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had 11 kills while sophomore Michelle Godfrey (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) had 10. Junior Brittany Gerde (Cincinnati, Ohio) had nine kills and hit .471 to go along with 23 assists while Jess Stackhouse (Warsaw, N.Y.) had 25 digs for Canisius (6-12, 4-3 MAAC).
The Griffs won the first game easily, breaking open a 6-6 tie with a 7-1 run and then extending a 16-10 lead to 21-10, which was helped by two service aces by Sarah Podlesh (Pittsford, N.Y.).
In game two, Marist rallied to tie the match at one game apiece. The Griffs held a 20-14 advantage, but the Red Foxes went on a 13-4 run to take a 27-24 lead. Canisius eventually tied the score at 29-29, but the Red Foxes won the next two points to take the second game.
Just like game one, the Griffs controlled the third game, winning the first seven points and never letting the Red Foxes get closer than six the rest of the way. In the fourth game, the Griffs used another seven-point run to turn a 10-8 deficit into a 15-10 lead. Marist got within two at 22-20, but could never close the gap as Canisius earned its first conference road win of the year.
“Today we got a solid all-around team effort, and it’s great to get the first road win of the season,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “Getting road wins in the conference are difficult, which makes today’s victory even more worthwhile.”
Four players had double-digit kills for Marist (6-12, 2-5), led by 19 from Alexandra Schultze.
