The Canisius College volleyball team rallied from a two-games-to-one deficit and defeated Iona 24-30, 30-24, 25-30, 30-18, 15-10 Saturday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Griffs have won four straight conference home matches and six of their last seven at home overall.
Junior Brittany Gerde (Cincinnati, Ohio) led Canisius (8-14, 6-5 MAAC) with a career-high 15 kills while Renee Lettow (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and Morgan Ammons (Findlay, Ohio) each had 13 kills. Mary Curran (West Islip, N.Y.) got her ninth start of the season and had a career-high eight kills.
Lauren Lackovich (Bloomington, Ill.) had a team-best 27 assists while Gerde had 22. Jess Stackhouse (Warsaw, N.Y.) totaled 28 digs while Sarah Podlesh (Pittsford, N.Y.) had 16 digs and Lettow had 13.
“We won a match that we needed to win today,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “Our veterans stepped up and led the rally when we were down two games to one.”
Iona came out and controlled the first game by hitting .444 in the game. The Griffs evened the match at one game apiece by building a big lead in the second game and never looking back. Up 10-7, Canisius broke open the game with an 11-4 run.
The Gaels regained the advantage by taking a close third game that featured six ties and three lead changes. Iona put the game away late by winning three straight points when ahead 25-24. In the fourth game, Canisius used a five-point run at the start and never relinquished the lead en route to tying the match.
The Griffs carried that formula over to the fifth game, winning six of the first seven points completing the rally to win their 13 conference home match in the last 16.
Iona (10-14, 7-4) was led by 18 kills from Kristin Allain. Allison Nieters had a match-high 35 digs and Alyssa Morales led all players with 54.
Canisius hosts Fairfield on Sunday, at the Koessler Athletic Center. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
Match Notes: The start of the match was delayed by 40 minutes due to power outages affecting the area... Canisius has won three of the last four matches between the schools... Michella Domo (Vancouver, B.C.) had three solo blocks and three block assists as the Griffs totaled nine as a team... Iona had 16 service errors in the match... The Griffs rallied from a 2-1 deficit for the first time since Oct. 16, 2006... Ammons had the second-most kills in her career, with her career high being 15 at Siena on Oct. 30, 2005... The 16 digs by Podlesh were the most by the junior since she had 16 at Manhattan Oct. 28, 2006.
