Volleyball Closes Season with a Win

Senior Jess Stackhouse totaled 30 digs to tie her own single-season record for digs in a season as the Canisius College volleyball team defeated the Manhattan Jaspers 26-30, 30-22, 30-26, 30-24 on Sunday afternoon in Riverdale, N.Y. The Griffs close the season with four wins in their last five matches.

Stackhouse finishes the season with 621 digs, just as she did as a junior, and ends her Canisius career with 2,095 career digs and a digs per game average of 5.02. The libero finished her season with a digs per game average of 5.80, the best in program history.

Freshman Michella Domo led the Griffs with a career-high 22 kills in the match and hit a match-best .391 on a career-high 46 attack attempts. Fellow freshman Mary Curran also set career highs in kills (12) and attack attempts (26).

Along with the 30 digs from Stackhouse, the Griffs had three other players total double-digit digs, including a season-high 18 digs by junior Sarah Podlesh. Junior Brittany Gerde had 14 digs to go along with 14 assists and seven kills while freshman Renee Lettow had 15 digs and eight kills.

The Canisius block continued its late-season production, getting 11 against the Jaspers. Domo had six block assists, Lettow had five and Curran had four.

Canisius (12-17, 10-8 MAAC) finished with a 10-8 record in the conference and is one of three programs to reach double-digit wins in the MAAC during each of the last two seasons.

“While we’re not going to the postseason, it’s nice to end on the season on the win,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “We closed the year with some positive momentum, and I’m definitely looking forward to next season.”

The Jaspers took the first game by taking the lead at 21-20 and never relinquished the advantage. In the second game, the Griffs broke it open with a 9-3 run late to go up 27-19. Canisius jumped out early in the third game, going ahead by as much as 11 at 20-9 and then holding on for the four-point win. The fourth game saw Canisius build a 24-14 lead before the Jaspers won six straight points to bring it within four. Manhattan eventually got as close as two at 26-24, but the Griffs won the last four points to close out the match.

The Jaspers had four players with double-digit kills, led by 17 each from Rita Welsh and Sherryta Stokes. Manhattan (6-24, 5-13) also had four players with double-digit digs, led by 26 from Ashley Watson.

Match Notes:
Lauren Lackovich, the Griffs’ other senior, had a team-high 28 assists in the match and closed her career with 2,619, good for second on the Canisius all-time list... Podlesh finished the season with 45 assists, the same as her sophomore season, which ranks sixth all-time... Domo led the team with an attack percentage of .343 on the season, which ranks second all-time, and finished with 95 block assists, which rank third all-time... The Griffs had consecutive winning seasons in the MAAC for the second time under Hummel, with the other occurrence coming in 2002 and 2003.
