The Canisius College women’s basketball and volleyball teams received NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program public recognition awards for 2007-08, the NCAA announced April 24. The public recognition awards are presented to the best academically performing teams that rank in the top 10 percent within their sport in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).

The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. Multi-year APR scores for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition awards, will be announced by the NCAA May 6.

“This is an important public acknowledgement for the hard work and dedication our student-athletes put forth in the classroom,” Canisius Director of Athletic Bill Maher said. “The College’s focus on graduation and retention is part of our athletic department mission statement and we are proud of our student-athletes for their efforts to balance their academic and athletic experiences.”

This marks the second consecutive year that the women’s basketball and volleyball teams at Canisius have received public recognition awards from the NCAA. The women’s basketball team is one of four programs in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to receive the honor this year and is one of two MAAC women’s basketball programs to make the list in back-to-back academic years. A total of six women’s basketball players were named to the 2007-08 MAAC All-Academic Team, which was the third most for any school in the 10-member conference.

The Canisius volleyball team holds the distinction of being the only volleyball program in the MAAC to be recognized in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Head coach Cathy Hummel’s program is one of 41 women’s volleyball teams to be recognized nationally and the Griffs boast a perfect score of 1,000 with 100 percent eligibility and 100 percent retention rates since the APR began during the 2003-04 academic year.
