The Canisius College volleyball team dropped a four-set match at Siena College on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins lost 25-22, 25-14, 17-25, 25-16 and fall to 14-8 overall and 9-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Canisius lost back-to-back matches for the first time this season.

For the second consecutive day, sophomore Renee Lettow led the Golden Griffin attack -- recording 11 kills in the match. Senior Brittany Gerde had nine kills while junior Michelle Godfrey had six blocks, with four of them being solo blocks. Freshman Carley Youngman posted 13 digs while senior Sarah Podlesh had 12.

"Not to take anything away from Siena, but that was an extremely disappointing loss for us today. Our team showed earlier this season that we can play with one of the top programs in the league," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We haven't replaced the leadership and production that we've lost on the court. Every match at this time of year is important in working toward our goal of winning a MAAC Championship.

"We need to have a good week of practice to get ourselves refocused."

The teams played their closest set of the match in the first set. Siena (12-11, 10-2) used a three-point run to turn a 10-10 tie into a three-point lead and would never relinquish the lead the rest of the set. Canisius closed the gap to one point five times, including at 23-22 after a kill by Janelle Davis. The Saints would win the last two points to take the set.

After Siena won the second set, Canisius responded with a third-set victory. The Griffs used a seven-point run on the serve of Danielle Brawn to build a 16-7 advantage and would win the set on a kill by Layne Adams.

Siena closed the match in the fourth set, going up 15-9 and not letting Canisius get closer than four points.

Burgandy McCurty led all players with 25 kills while Kelly Hummel posted a match-high .448 attack percentage. April London had 54 assists.

Canisius returns home next weekend for two matches. The Golden Griffins host Fairfield on Saturday, at the Koessler Athletic Center. Match time is set for 2 p.m.

Match Notes: Lettow has double-digit kills in three straight and four of the last five... Youngman had 33 digs during the weekend's matches... Godfrey posted at least three blocks for the 18th time in 2008 and for the seventh consecutive match... Canisius lost consecutive matches for the first time since Oct. 21-27, 2007.
