The rally from the Canisius College volleyball team fell short as the Golden Griffins lost in four sets to Siena on Sunday, by the score of 25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23. Canisius is now 6-10 overall and 3-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Freshman Samantha Good led Canisius with 21 kills – the third time in the last four matches the freshman has set a career high. Junior Renee Lettow had a double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs. Sophomore Janelle Davis had 45 assists, seven kills, seven digs, five block assists and three service aces. Freshman Allyson Severyn had 21 digs.

“We need to bring a consistent intensity level from the start of the match, which we didn't do this weekend,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “We’re a young team, but we don’t have to act young. We need to grow up in that area if we’re going to find success in our conference.”

Siena (6-8, 4-2 MAAC) controlled the first set by going on a 9-1 run to go up 20-11 on a kill from Burgandy McCurty, one of 28 in the match for the senior. The Saint then won the final four points in the second set to go up 2-0 in the match, winning the set on consecutive kills from Jasmine Brown.

Canisius jumped out to a big lead in the third set, going up by as many as eight points when a kill from sophomore Danielle Brawn made the score 12-4. Siena chipped away at the Canisius lead, getting as close as two at 15-13, but the Griffs scored five of the next six points to regain control and eventually win the set.

Canisius rallied in the fourth set, winning seven straight points to turn a 14-9 deficit into a 16-14 lead. The Saints came back by winning four straight points and the teams would be tied at 22-22 on a kill from Good. Siena won three of the final four points to close out the match.

Canisius hits the road next weekend to play at Loyola on Saturday, and at Rider on Sunday, with both matches set for 2 p.m.

Match Notes: Siena defeated Canisius for the third consecutive match… Canisius lost its third straight conference home match for the first time since losing three straight from Nov. 8, 2003 to Oct. 16, 2004… Lettow had a double-double for the fourth time this season… Good is averaging 4.31 kills per set during the last four matches… Davis had at least five blocks for the third time in the last five matches and has 21 blocks during that stretch.
