After taking the first two sets, the Canisius College volleyball team hung on for a five-set victory against Manhattan on Saturday. The Golden Griffins won 25-20, 25-20, 25-27, 22-25, 15-10 to improve to 9-11 overall and 6-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Freshman Samantha Good tied for the match high with 19 kills while sophomore Layne Adams had career-high 13 kills and a career-high eight blocks. Junior Renee Lettow had her third consecutive double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs. Sophomore Danielle Brawn had 12 kills while sophomore Janelle Davis had a career-high 52 assists and freshman Allyson Severyn had 17 digs.

"We showed some mental toughness by winning the first two sets," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We had a letdown in the middle of the match and had to scrap out a much-needed win."

In the first set, Canisius scored five straight points to turn a 10-9 lead into a six-point advantage. The run featured kills from Good, Davis and Brawn. Manhattan would get as close as three points on two occasions, making it 21-18 on a Canisius attack error. The Griffs closed out the set with two kills from Good.

Canisius opened up a 2-0 lead in the match by winning the final five points of the second set, which featured 15 ties and four lead changes. The Griffs recorded blocks on three straight points and Layne Adams had kills on the final two points for the second set win.

Manhattan (6-14, 2-7 MAAC) responded by taking the third and fourth sets. The Lady Jaspers won a back-and-forth third set as the Griffs held a 13-6 lead but Manhattan won nine straight points to go up 15-13. Canisius responded with a 4-1 run to go up 17-16 and eventually led 24-22. However, Manhattan would stave off two match points and take the set on a kill from Jaci Rahey.

In the fifth set, Manhattan held a 10-9 lead before Canisius won a lengthy point, capped by a kill from Adams to tie the set at 10-10. That point spurred five straight from the Griffs who won the match on a kill from Brawn.

Canisius concludes the homestand on Sunday, when the Golden Griffins host Saint Peter's. Match time at the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 2 p.m.
