Volleyball Travels to Fairfield and Iona

The Canisius College volleyball team (10-11, 7-4 MAAC) has two road matches this weekend. The Golden Griffins take their 6-1 road record to play at Fairfield (12-10, 9-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Iona (6-14, 3-7) on Sunday at 3 p.m.

NOTING THE GRIFFS

  • After three home matches in four days, Canisius has conference, road matches at Fairfield and Iona this weekend.
  • Canisius is 4-0 in MAAC road matches for the first time in program history and is 6-1 in road matches on the season.
  • Freshman Samantha Good was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on Monday. It’s the third time this season, and second consecutive week, Good has earned the award.
  • Good has recorded double-digit kills in nine straight matches, the longest streak by a freshman in program history.
  • In conference play, Good leads Canisius and ranks seventh in the MAAC in attack percentage (.303) and sevnth in kills per set (3.66). Good leads all MAAC freshmen in both categories in league matches.
  • Sophomore Janelle Davis had a career-high 52 assists against Manhattan on Oct. 17, and a career-high 17 digs against Saint Peter’s on Oct. 18. Davis has played in all 194 sets of her Canisius career.
  • Freshman Allyson Severyn ranks second in the MAAC and 12th in the country in digs per set (5.33). Severyn has recorded double-digit digs in all 21 matches, the longest streak by a Canisius player in the past 10 years.
  • Senior Michelle Godfrey ranks eighth in the MAAC in attack percentage at .268 and is third in program history in block assists with 237.
  • Junior Renee Lettow has a team-best seven double-doubles on the season and now has 15 in her career.
  • The first set has been a predictor in 20 of the 21 Canisius matches this season as the Griffs are 10-1 when winning the first set and 0-10 when dropping the opening set.

FAIRFIELD SCOUT

  • Fairfield enters the weekend in first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings with a 9-1 conference record. Since 2006, the Stags are 60-4 in MAAC play and have won at least a share of the MAAC regular-season title each of the past five seasons.
  • In conference play, Katie Mann leads the MAAC in hitting percentage (.439) and is fourth in the MAAC in kills per set (4.51).
  • Through 10 conference matches, Lauren Balmert leads the MAAC in assists per set (11.66) while Haililani Pokipala and Kara Reis lead the conference in service aces per set (0.60)
  • Fairfield has won six of the last eight meetings with Canisius earning wins in 2005 and 2008. Canisius has lost all eight meetings between the teams at Fairfield.

IONA SCOUT

  • Iona enters the weekend with a 3-6 conference record, tied for seventh place in the conference. The Gaels dropped both of their conference matches last weekend.
  • In conference play, Molly O’Shea ranks seventh in the MAAC in attack percentage (.293).
  • Allison Nieters is first in the conference in digs per set (5.42) through 10 MAAC matchups.
  • Canisius defeated Iona in three sets at the Koessler Athletic Center in the first conference match of the season. Canisius has lost its last two matches at Iona, with the last win coming in 2006.
