The Canisius College volleyball team dropped its first conference road match of the season in three sets at Fairfield on Saturday. The Golden Griffins lost 25-20, 25-21, 25-18 and are now 10-12 overall and 7-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Junior Renee Lettow led the Griffs with eight kills while freshman Samantha Good had seven kills - the first time in 10 matches that Good didn't record double-digit kills. Freshman Allyson Severyn had 16 digs while sophomore Janelle Davis had 20 assists to go along with five kills on six attack attempts.

"We played well enough to compete today, but not well enough to get a win," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We'll have to regroup quickly for Iona on Sunday."

Fairfield (13-10, 10-1 MAAC) used a run of seven straight points to turn a 9-9 tie into a 16-9 lead in the first set. The Griffs could get no closer than four points during the rest of the set.

The second set featured 15 ties and six lead changes. The teams were tied at 19-19 when Fairfield used another run, this one a five-point run, to go up 24-19 and eventually go up two sets in the match.

Canisius trailed 11-6 in the third set and closed the deficit to 16-15 on a kill from Joanna Burt. However, the Stags never gave up the lead, closing the set on a 9-3 run to close out the match.

Three Fairfield players had double-digit kills in the match as Lauren Hughes and Katie Mann each had 13 kills apiece while Brianna Dixion had 12 kills. Lauren Balmert had 36 assists for a Fairfield offense that posted a .363 attack percentage in the match.

Canisius ends the road swing at Iona on Sunday, with match time set for 3 p.m.

Match Notes: The last time Good didn't have at least 10 kills in a match came Sept. 20, against Fairfield... Severyn now has double-digit kills in all 22 matches on the season... Davis didn't record 30 assists in a match for the first time in 10 matches... Fairfield sweeps the season series from Canisius for the third time in four seasons... Canisius is now 6-2 in road matches in 2009.
