After winning its opening four road MAAC games of the 2009 season, the Canisius College volleyball team lost its second consecutive conference match away from home with a three-set loss at Iona on Sunday. The Golden Griffins lost 25-23, 25-21, 25-16 and are now 10-13 overall and 7-6 in the MAAC.

Freshman Samantha Good led the Griffs with nine kills while junior Renee Lettow had seven kills and 16 digs. Sophomore Janelle Davis had a double-double with 22 assists and 10 digs while freshman Allyson Severyn had 24 digs.

As a team, Canisius had 10 blocks in the match, led by five from senior Michelle Godfrey. Davis and sophomore Layne Adams each had four blocks while Good and sophomore Joanna Burt each had three bocks

"We weren't able to rebound from our loss on Saturday and have put ourselves in a tough, must-win situation with three weeks left," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said.

With the score 16-15, Iona opened a five-point lead with 5-1 run, but Canisius would get within one at 24-23 after a block from Burt and Adams. The Gaels responded with a kill from Molly O'Shea to take the set.

In the second set, the teams were tied at 19-19, and Iona scored five consecutive points to take a 24-19 lead on a block from O'Shea and Alyssa Erickson and won the set on a kill from Rachel Whitten.

Iona (7-15, 4-8 MAAC) cruised in the third set, scoring five straight points with the score tied at 4-4 and never letting Canisius get within four points the rest of the way.

Rachel Whitten led all players with 11 kills and had a double-double with 10 digs. Allison Nieters had 22 digs while Sarah Wiener had 10 kills.

Canisius has three home matches next week, starting with the team's final non-conference game on Tuesday against Buffalo. The Griffs wrap up their regular season home schedule next weekend against Rider and Loyola.

Match Notes: Lettow had at least 10 digs for the fifth time in the last six matches... Davis had a double-double for the third time in the last five matches... Senior Kaela Glenn has been a perfect on 52 service reception attempts in the last four matches... Canisius had 10 team blocks in a road match for the first time since Sept. 27, at Manhattan.
