The Canisius College volleyball team lost in three sets at Iona College in the Hynes Athletic Center on Saturday. The Golden Griffins lost 25-17, 25-22 and 25-17 and are now 13-13 on the season and 9-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Sophomore Emily Elek led the Griffs with eight kills while sophomore Samantha Good had seven kills on the day. Junior Janelle Davis had a double-double with 20 assists and 11 digs while sophomore Allyson Severyn recorded a match-high 25 digs. Freshman Roxanne Hernandez led the Griffs with five block assists.

"Iona came out aggressive and showed the want that is admirable. That's what you need in late-season conference matches, especially when going on the road," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We need to learn how to overcome obstacles and improve our mental toughness quickly."

Iona (15-8, 9-4 MAAC) scored six straight points to take an early 8-3 lead in the first set and eventually went up 12-4 on a service ace from Theresa Harvey. Canisius never got closer than five points the rest of the way as the Gaels took the early lead.

The Gaels won the first five points of the second set and went up 12-4 for the second straight set before Canisius tried to fight back. The Griffs used a 13-6 run, including two kills from Hernandez, to make the score 18-17. Canisius could never get closer than one point as the Gaels never relinquished the lead en route to the second-set win.

Iona jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third set, getting two kills from Kelsey Hess during the early run. The Griffs won the next four points to make it 8-6, but Iona won six straight to build a 14-6 advantage. Canisius never cut the Iona lead to less than five points as the Gaels closed out the match.

Theresa Harvey led all players with 13 kills while Alicja Pawelec had 11 kills and a .474 attack percentage. Nicole Tamburri had a match-high 33 assists while Allison Nieters led the team with 23 digs.

Canisius concludes its regular-season road schedule against Fairfield on Sunday, with match time set for 2 p.m.
