The Canisius College volleyball team swept a conference weekend for the first time in 2011 with a 25-20, 25-16, 25-22 win over Loyola University at the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins improve to 9-11 overall and 4-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Senior Danielle Brawn totaled a match-high 14 kills and also had nine digs. Junior Samantha Good had eight kills and three blocks to go along with a .353 attack percentage. Freshman Olivia Chrzanowski hit .316 with seven kills and five digs. Senior Janelle Davis had 27 assists and nine digs while junior Allyson Severyn had 15 digs.

"It was a good win for us today and is really enjoyable to have back-to-back wins for the first time in a long time," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "That was the closest to a complete match of volleyball that we've played all year."

Down 10-9 in the first set, Canisius won four straight points to gain the lead it would never relinquish. Brawn had two kills in the stretch along with a kill from Good. The Greyhounds cut the Canisius lead to 13-12, but Canisius extended its lead with a 7-2 run, taking advantage of four Loyola attack errors, en route to winning the first set.

Canisius won the first two points and never trailed in the second set. The Greyhounds would tie the score at 7-7, but Canisius won five consecutive points, which was part of a 13-2 run that was capped by a service ace from Brawn. Good had five kills on six attack attempts in the set as Canisius hit .370 as a team.

Loyola came out of the break by winning the first seven points of the third set before Canisius battled its way back. The Griffs responded by winning four straight points and eventually tied the match at 12-12. Canisius took its first lead of the set at 17-16 on a Loyola attack error. The Greyohunds tied the score at 19-19 but Canisius won the next two points and wouldn't give up the lead, closing out the match on the fourth service ace of the match for Brawn.

Tina Catanach led Loyola (6-16, 3-6 MAAC) with nine kills. Lauren Andersen totaled 31 assists while Janet PRessler had 13 digs and Katie Dircks had 12 digs.

Canisius continues its five-match homestand on Wednesday night, when the Golden Griffins host rival Niagara University in a Battle of the Bridge contest. Match time in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to participate in the "Dig Pink" campaign and wear pink to the games.
