Senior Allyson Severyn was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Libero of the Week by the conference today, receiving the award for the third time this season. Severyn is the only libero in the conference to win the award more than once through eight weeks.
Severyn averaged 6.44 digs per set and had a 96.7 service reception percentage (58-for-60) in two Canisius wins over the weekend. Severyn had 28 digs in the Griffs' five-set win over Fairfield when she became the second player in program history and fourth player in conference history to reach 2,000 career digs. Severyn followed that up with 30 digs in a four-set win against Iona, recording double-digit digs for the 31st consecutive match.
This is the sixth time in the 5-foot-7 libero's career that she has earned a weekly award from the MAAC.
On the season, Severyn ranks second in the MAAC with a 5.57 digs per set average and leads the Golden Griffins with a .960 service reception percentage. The Lancaster, N.Y. native has 2,055 career digs, needing 41 digs to break the career record of 2,095 digs set by Jess Stackhouse (2004-07).
Canisius, which is off to a program-best 8-1 start in MAAC play and holds a two-game lead in the loss column over the rest of the conference, play three matches this weekend. The Golden Griffins face rival Niagara University on Wednesday night (6 p.m.) at the Gallagher Center before returning to the Koessler Athletic Center to host Siena on Saturday (2 p.m.) and Marist on Sunday (2 p.m.).
