The Canisius College volleyball team was picked third in the preseason coaches poll, announced by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference today.
Canisius received 74 points in the preseason poll to finish in the top three of the preseason poll for the second time in three years and in the top four for the sixth time in eight years. Defending champion Fairfield earned 99 of a possible 100 points to finish first, with Siena taking second place with 85 points. Following the Griffs was Manhattan in fourth (70 points), Iona in fifth (53), Marist in sixth (50) and Niagara in seventh (49). Rider (36), Saint Peter’s (18) and Quinnipiac (16) rounded out the poll.
Canisius has finished in the top four of the regular-season MAAC standings in each of the last three seasons and five times in the last seven seasons.
The 2013 MAAC Championship will take place Nov. 23 and 24, on the campus of Siena College.
Nine players were named to the preseason All-MAAC team with Rachel Romansky of Fairfield earning Preseason Player of the Year honors.
Canisius hosts the Golden Griffin Invitational at the Koessler Athletic Center this weekend. The Blue and Gold opens the 2013 season against Eastern Michigan at noon on Friday. Canisius also faces North Carolina State at 4 p.m. on Friday, Hartford at noon on Saturday, and Cleveland State at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
