The Canisius baseball team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end in a 2-1 loss in 10 innings to the University of Akron at Canal Park on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Griffins drop to 18-8 on the season.

Akron (13-12) got on the board in the bottom of the second as Matt Rembielak reached on an infield single and Cale Giddings followed with an RBI double to left to put the Zips up 1-0.

Canisius had a number of opportunities to get on the scoreboard but couldn’t come through with the timely hit for most of the game as the Griffs went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Junior Jesse Puscheck reached on a one-out walk in the fourth, and junior Connor Panas followed with a double to get two runners in scoring position. Sophomore Brett Siddall flew out and senior Ryan Coppinger struck out to strand the baserunners.

In the sixth, senior Jimmy Luppens reached on a one-out double and then moved to third on a wild pitch, but Puscheck and Panas struck out to end the threat. Pinch hitter Mike Krische singled with one out in the seventh and stole second base. He moved to third on a bunt, but senior Ronnie Bernick flew out to keep the Zips up 1-0. The Griffs continued to apply the pressure in the eighth as sophomore Anthony Massicci led off with a single but was picked off. Luppens drew a two-out walk and Puscheck followed with a single, but Panas lined out to third base to end the inning.

The Griffs finally got on the scoreboard in the ninth as Siddall led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a one-out double from senior Jesse Kelso. In the 10th, Luppens led off with a single but Puscheck hit into a double play.

Akron got a leadoff double from Rembielak in the 10th and after two walks loaded the bases, pinch hitter Brady Stewart singled to right to give the Zips the walk-off win.

Junior Eric Stolzenburg (1-1) took the loss by allowing one run in 1.1 innings of relief. Freshman Zachary Trumpler started and allowed one run in three innings. Senior Mike Tolsma threw 3.1 scoreless innings of relief while sophomore Iannick Remillard threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two batters.

Massicci, Luppens, Puscheck and Panas each had two hits on the day, as Canisius posted 11 hits and had double-digit hits for the 19th time on the season. Massicci had his eighth steal of the year while Krische stole his ninth base and his fourth in the last four games.

Canisius resumes its conference schedule this weekend with a three-game series at Fairfield. First pitch for Saturday’s doubleheader is set for noon.
