The Marist Red Foxes cruised to a doubleheader sweep of the Canisius softball team on Saturday, posting a 5-0 win in game one before dropping the Golden Griffins 8-0 in five innings. Marist improved to 24-22 overall and 14-4 in MAAC action with the wins, while Canisius dropped its fourth straight to fall to 16-30 overall and 6-12 in the MAAC.
Marist junior Melanie White moved her record to 6-6 on the season as she went the distance in the circle and allowed five hits while letting only one Canisius base runner to reach third in the game. Sophomore Alexis Roman had two singles for the Blue and Gold in the loss and freshman Jessica Berzins extended her hitting streak to six games with a single in the top-half of the sixth. Senior Jen Consaul took the loss for the Blue and Gold as he record moved to 15-19 on the year. Consaul allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits while striking out two.
In the second game, the host Red Foxes scored three times in the bottom of the first and then added two more runs in the second en route to an 8-0 victory in five innings. Marist collected eight runs on eight hits off Canisius freshman Sarah Andrews, who slipped to 1-7 on the year with the loss. The Griffs were able to break up Marist starter Janine Lalli's bid for a no-hitter when sophomore Meghan Cuda recorded a base hit in the top of the fifth inning.
Canisius will close out the 2014 season on Sunday when the team plays at Quinnipiac. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
Game Notes: Canisius nows leads the all-time series with Marist by a 27-14 count... This marks the first time the two teams haven't split a MAAC doubleheader since 2008... Canisius has been shutout in three of its last four games... Senior Valorie Nappo say her season-long six-game hit streak come to an end in game one.
