NOTING THE GRIFFS

  • The No. 3 seed Canisius College volleyball team takes on No. 2 seed Siena in the semifinals of the MAAC Championship, Sunday at 1 p.m.
  • With a 12-6 record in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matches, Canisius finished third in the conference for the second time in three seasons.
  • Canisius and Siena met in the semifinals of the 2006 MAAC Championship in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., with the Saints defeating the Griffs in three sets.
  • Canisius is making its eighth MAAC Championship appearance in program history and qualified for a four-team MAAC Championship for the first time since 1993. Canisius would have qualified for a four-team tournament in 2006 with its third-place finish in the MAAC standings, but all 10 teams qualified for the tournament at Walt Disney World.
  • Overall, Canisius is 7-11 in the postseason and has won four of its last five postseason matches.
  • Canisius, Siena and Fairfield have won double-digit conference matches each of the past three seasons.
  • Freshman Janelle Davis has been named the MAAC Rookie of the Week four times Oct. 20, Oct. 13, Sept. 22 and Sept. 2. Davis is the first player in program history to win the award more than two times in one season. Davis is also the only freshman in the conference to win the award four times in 2008.
  • Head coach Cathy Hummel recorded her 100th career victory with the 3-0 win over Saint Peter’s Nov. 2.
  • Canisius has held its opponents to an attack percentage under .200 in 10 of the last 16 matches and is 9-1 in those 10 matches.
  • Canisius is 6-3 in five-set matches this season.
  • Canisius has won three times this season after losing the first two sets of the match. Prior to 2008, the Griffs had won a match when it trailed 2-0 four times in 19 seasons.

SIENA SCOUT
  • Siena enters the MAAC Tournament as the three-time defending champion, defeating Fairfield in the championship match each of the past three seasons.
  • The Saints lead the league in attack percentage (.217) and kills per set (12.69). Siena ranks eighth in opponent attack percentage (.210), second in assists per set (11.65), seventh in blocks per set (1.54) and seventh in digs per set (15.25).
  • Burgandy McCurty, the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, leads the league in attack percentage (.361) and kills per set (4.61).
  • April London ranks second in the league in assists per set (10.14) and fourth in service aces per set (0.35).

HISTORY AGAINST SIENA
  • Siena and Canisius are meeting for the third time in 2008, with each team winning on its own home court.
  • Canisius defeated Siena in five sets in the conference opener for both teams Sept. 20. It was the first win for the Griffs over the Saints since the 2004 season.
  • The Saints defeated Canisius in four sets on Oct. 26.
  • Siena holds a 17-9 advantage in the all-time series and has won seven of the last eight in the series.
  • Canisius last won in Loudonville on Nov. 2, 2003.

CANISIUS POSTSEASON HISTORY
  • Canisius is in the postseason for the seventh time in program history. 2008 is the first year since 1993 that the Golden Griffins have qualified for a four-team MAAC Championship.
  • Canisius was a part of MAAC Championship held at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. in 2006, 2002 and 1998.
  • Canisius qualified for four consecutive MAAC Championships from 1990 to 1993.
  • The Griffs had their best-ever finish in the postseason at the 2006 MAAC Championship, claiming third place.

REGULAR-SEASON RECAP
  • Canisius and Fairfield are the only schools in the conference to defeat each team in the MAAC in 2008.
  • Canisius finished with a 9-0 record in MAAC home matches.
  • Canisius defeated Fairfield and Siena in the same season for the first time since 1992.
  • The Golden Griffins opened the 2008 season with three wins in the first three matches of the season for the first time in program history.
  • The 7-3 start by the Griffs was the best 10-match start in program history. The previous best start was 6-4, which happened in 2006 and 1997.
