CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Canisius baseball team took to the field at Boshamer Stadium on the campus of North Carolina Thursday afternoon in preparation for the Golden Griffins’ NCAA Regional game against the top-seeded Tar Heels. Canisius, the 2013 MAAC Champions, will meet No. 1 North Carolina Friday, May 31, at 6:05 p.m.

Per NCAA rules, each of the four teams in the North Carolina Regional were given 75 minutes of practice time at Boshamer Stadium, which is hosting a regional event for the seventh time in the last eight years.

The Griffs are making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament after posting a 42-15 overall record and winning the MAAC’s automatic berth by going 3-0 in the conference tournament in Trenton, N.J., last weekend. The 42 wins are the most for any No. 4 seed in this year’s tournament and it also set a new record for single-season wins by a MAAC school.

Carolina is the nation’s top seed and the Tar Heels enter the national postseason tournament with a 52-8 overall record. The 2013 ACC champions, North Carolina has piled up 42 wins in the last eight postseasons, which is tied for South Carolina for the most in the nation during that time period. UNC starts Friday’s action with an all-time record of 89-60 in NCAA Tournament action and the team boasts a 26-5 mark as a host school.

The first game of the North Carolina Regional is set to begin on Friday at 1 p.m., when No. 2 seed Florida Atlantic takes on No. 3 seed Towson. Florida Atlantic went 39-20 during the regular season and won the Sun Belt title to earn its berth into the event, while Towson posted an overall record of 29-28. The Tigers won the Colonial Athletic Association crown last weekend by defeating William & Mary 5-2 in the CAA title game.

The Canisius-North Carolina game will be broadcast live on ESPN3, with Jones Angell and John Manuel on the call. The audio broadcast will be provided through GoGriffs.com and the Golden Griffin Broadcast Network with Matt Reitnour and former Canisius pitcher Tim Seil providing commentary.
