Canisius was picked to finish first in the conference. In the top 10 players in the MAAC for the 2014 MLB Draft, junior righty Rohn Pierce was No. 5, junior righty Devon Stewart was sixth and junior outfielder Mike Krische was 10th. Sophomore outfielder Brett Siddall was listed second in the top five for the 2015 MLB Draft while righty Iannick Remillard was listed fifth. Freshman Jake Lumley was listed second for the 2016 MLB Draft. The six Golden Griffins are the most in the MAAC, with Siena and Monmouth each having four.

Canisius was projected as the MAAC champion and given the No. 4 seed in the Fullerton Regional.

Canisius (projected to the Raleigh Regional at N.C. State) was named the Team to Beat in the conference

The Golden Griffins return almost every key piece from an offense that was easily the MAAC’s best in 2013, when they set a school record with 42 wins. Sr. 1B Jimmy Luppens, a .368 hitter last season, anchors a lineup composed entirely of juniors and seniors. Canisius will also look for big things from Jr. 3B Connor Panas, a potential power threat, and Sr. OF Jesse Kelso, the son of former NFL player Mark Kelso who’s shown a promising feel for hitting. The pitching staff did lose ace Garret Cortright, but So. LHP Alex Godzak, the 2013 MAAC rookie of the year, should help fill the void

Siddall was named the No. 4 prospect in the conference while Stewart was listed ninth.

Canisius was picked to finish first in the MAAC by the 11 league coaches in the preseason poll. The Griffs finished first in the preseason poll for the third time under 10th-year coach Mike McRae, also topping the poll in 2008 and 2009.

Luppens was unanimously named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, becoming the first Golden Griffin to receive the honor since Kevin Mahoney prior to the 2009 season.
